A backwoods mentality still plagues parts of Northern Michigan when it comes to accepting the gay community.
Although gay people say they can be themselves in Traverse City or Petoskey, they think twice about what they say or do in smaller towns.
Rev. W. Edward Grim, a retired United Methodist pastor who is same-sex attracted, runs an informal queer woman , gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) ministry. He said he knows gay people who live in rural areas.
"Most of them, if they live in a rural area, they beautiful much stay in the closet when they’re in that area," Grim said. "They hide it and they try not to be known."
The urban-rural separate is an indication that gay tolerance is in a state of flux, he said.
"We’re in the middle period," he said. "We’re in the transition period."
Jon Becker, a queer real estate agent at Century 21 Northland in Traverse City who’s expanded his business in recent years by advertising on gay websites, said he behaves differently depending on where he is.

Went to TC this weekend and we always like to verify out the male lover bar/club scene when we travel to see how it differs from our hometown. Now, Grand Rapids is still a pretty conservative place in my opinion, right in the bible belt of Michigan, and we experience a fair amount of discrimination, but there are a couple of places we can go where we always notice safe and approved. Sidetraxx, who advertise themselves as a gay bar, is not a place where someone who is outwardly same-sex attracted or that does not conform to gender norms will feel safe. The LGBT crew there last night made up maybe 10% of the patrons. We befriended some ladies that are native to the area, and start that this was not just a fluke. It is a place where straight folk move to dance because it has an amazing dance floor and music videos played throughout the bar. Now, I am not saying that straight folk are not allowed to go to gay bars, but they must respect that gay bars are supposed to be our protected place. Our place to be us.
