Subarus are for the Gays
Durable, rugged and practical — a Subaru is a trusty companion on the road. But tucked beneath its hood lies a not-so-secret identity; it has get a certified lesbian icon.
With a special place in the hearts (and garages) of lesbian drivers, Subarus are sparking conversations around the intersections of identity, visibility and targeted marketing.
“I trust lesbians and lesbians trust Subarus,” said Jillian Wilson, a junior Visual Communication Design major at Kent State.
When purchasing any car, reliability, practicality and aesthetics can be deciding factors. Michelle Eisen, a Print Media and Photography MFA Candidate at Kent State, purchased a Subaru Forester with her partner in for these reasons.
“We wanted something reliable, spacious and feminine,” said Eisen. “A lot of cars at the second were harsh looking; there were a lot of hard edges and sharp lines. The Forester stood out because of its softness.”

Not everyone bursts out of the closet. Some take their moment, send subtle signals, test the waters, and — when they feel theyre ready — vault to the top of the parade.
Thats what Subaru did.
In the early ’90s, Subaru began winking at lesbian ride buyers. The messages were coded so carefully that they would go over a straight persons head. But lesbians, and the LGBTQ community as a whole, knew exactly what was going on.
It was love sneaking a game of footsie under the dinner table.

Today, the clues will come across obvious, even to many straight people. At the period, though, they were cleverly hidden in plain sight.

How an Ad Campaign Made Lesbians Decline in Love with Subaru
Subaru’s marketing strategy had just died in a fit of irony.
It was the mid s, and sales of Subaru cars were in decline. To opposite the company’s fortunes, Subaru of America had created its first luxury car—even though the small automaker was known for plain but dependable cars—and hired a trendy advertising agency to introduce it to the public.
The new approach had fallen flat when the ad men took irony too far: One ad touted the unused sports car’s top speed of MPH, then asked, “How important is that, with extended urban gridlock, gas at $ a gallon and highways complete of patrolmen?
After firing the hip ad agency, Subaru of America changed its approach. Rather than contend directly with Ford, Toyota, and other carmakers that dwarfed Subaru in size, executives decided to refund to its old emphasize on marketing Subaru cars to niche groups—like outdoorsy types who liked that Subaru cars could deal with dirt roads.
