DC Comics reveal that latest Superman character is bisexual

DC Comics has announced that its latest Superman, Jon Kent, will be bisexual.

In its next comic manual issue, due for release in November, Jon will be pictured in a same-sex relationship with his friend Jay Nakamura.

The storyline is part of 'Superman: Son of Kal-El', a series monitoring Jon as he takes on the mantle of Superman from his father, Clark Kent.

DC Comics made the announcement on National Coming Out Day, an annual LGBT awareness day started in the US.

Since the series was released in July, Jon has already fought wildfires caused by climate change, scuppered a lofty school shooting, and protested against the deportation of refugees.

In an earlier issue, Jon struck up a friendship with Jay - a bespectacled, pink-haired reporter.

DC Comics said the pair will develop romantically involved in the upcoming fifth issue, after Jon "mentally and physically burns out from trying to save everyone that he can".

In the latest issue of All New X-Men, Iceman is a teenage version of himself which has been transported to the future to aid the adult X-Men team solve a crisis.

After commenting on how attractive he finds a female teacher, mind-reader Jean Grey asks Iceman why he calls women "hot" when she knows he is gay and doesn't care.

The comic also mentions that the present date Iceman has not revealed he is gay and has had relationships with women in the past.

Actor Shawn Ashmore, who plays Iceman in the X-Men movies, and blogger Perez Hilton, are some of the celebrities who hold tweeted their happiness that Iceman has come out as gay.

Batwoman: Lesbian comic hero to get TV series

A TV adaptation of Batwoman is to become the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead character.

The show is being developed for the US channel, the CW, adding to the network's collection of shows based on DC comics characters.

Batwoman was introduced in the s as a love interest for Batman to dispel rumours of his retain homosexuality.

The character was reintroduced in as a male lover woman called Kate Kane.

She has since become the highest-profile openly gay traits of any DC comic.

The show's synopsis describes Kate Kane as an "out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence".

It says she is "armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind".

However, she must "overcome her own demons" before emerging as a hero in Gotham City.

Brazil mayor blocked from banning Avengers comic over homosexual kiss

Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled that a Marvel comic showing two men kissing can be sold despite attempts to disallow it by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

Mayor Marcelo Crivella, a former bishop, had demanded the comic be withdrawn from a book unbiased, saying it included content unsuitable for minors.

The Supreme Court overturned a decision by a decrease court that permitted a ban.

Copies of the comic book, Avengers: The Children's Crusade, quickly sold out after the mayor's intervention.

The Supreme Court made it illegal to ban any LGBT publication. It ruled that Mr Crivella's actions were illegal as they only targeted LGBT content.

The illustration that upset that mayor was also printed on the front page of Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo on Saturday.
